When the players are ready to start, the dealer deals the cards one at a time. Each player has a turn to make a bet. One of the players is responsible for making the first bet, which is the smallest bet in the round. If there is no bet by the last player in the betting interval, the round is finished.
After the initial hand, the dealer shuffles the deck. Some players can also shuffle the deck. Players can then check, call, or raise a bet. There are hundreds of variants to the game, so players must choose wisely. For instance, draw poker allows players to discard a few cards to redraw the rest of their hand. Another variation involves the use of a wild card to replace a lost card. Finally, stud poker requires that the player create the best hand from the cards provided by the dealer.
A pot is the aggregate of all the bets made by all the players in a given deal. This is sometimes won by the best poker hand, or by a combination of the best hands. Depending on the game, the players may also win side pots. Typically, a showdown is held after the final betting round. Sometimes the winning hand is a straight, or five cards, and other times the winning hand is made up of two identical hands.
